Gingivitis is the mildest and most common disease of the gums and causes inflammation of the tissues around the teeth. Periodontal disease is more serious when the inflammation affects the tissue connector that holds the teeth and, eventually, the bone. It is estimated that 20 percent of Americans have periodontitis, making it the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.
Because of that periodontal disease is so common, Genco explained, could successfully treat the disease have significant effects on public health, even if it has only a small part of the other diseases.
